Windermere to Ambleside – bus back

Last week we walked in Coverdale and noted how remarkably few visitors it had. This week, we walk from Windermere to Ambleside – and find that the same description does not apply. In fact, if you ask Google (other search engines are available) where the busiest places in the Lake District are, the answer is Windermere and Ambleside.
So, did we fall into a tourist hell hole? Not at all: Skilful route selection meant that for much of the walk we were free from crowds, and even the ever popular Orrest Head was approached by the less well known Common Wood route. From the Head we take the Dubbs Road to Dubbs Reservoir and then down to Limefitt where we cross the Trout Beck, and then the A592. After a quick look at Jesus Church, we climb to Troutbeck village before taking Robin Lane through Skelghyll Wood and then down to Waterhead in Ambleside. A convenient bus back to Windermere ends the trip.

Staveley Woodlands

Staveley has long been a favourite of Bentham Footpath Group – this is the third time we have visited in the time we have been documenting our walks on our website, but a review of old program cards shows that we have visited here at least once a year for as long as the group has existed.
A quick glance at the gallery for todays’ walk explains why we keep coming back – the views are stunning, and the varied landscape provides a rich mixture of flora and fauna. Add a few fascinating buildings, and even an opportunity to go shopping, along with riverside sections featuring weirs and waterfalls, and we create a walk that’s too good to miss. Our members clearly think so, as evidenced by the great turn out. Lovely autumn sunshine helps, but this is a great walk at any time of the year.

The Old Man of Coniston from Torver

Last week’s walk at Waddington took us to the Forest of Bowland, where we noted that there were fewer visitors than our typical Yorkshire Dales walks. This time we do exactly the opposite – we head to one of the best loved peaks in the Lake District, and trust that the stunning scenery makes up for the higher visitor numbers.
So, did this work? Absolutely: A quick glance at the gallery on our website shows that we picked a perfect day – bright late summer sunshine, without being too hot – made the whole day simply perfect.
If you pick this walk expect a steep climb, some clambering over rocks, idyllic tarns, daring rock climbers, jaw dropping views, industrial archaeology, waterfalls, and an ice cream stop. Take your costume and you can add wild swimming to the day’s fun.

Dentdale

Dentdale is one of the more popular gems of the Yorkshire Dales, and so not surprisingly, Bentham Footpath Group visit regularly. Every time we come here there is something different to see, and this time we start from the Church Bridge and take a riverside path downstream for a short distance before coming back to the centre of the village via the picnic area. We then head up the enchanting Flintergill, visiting an open air museum and enjoying a viewpoint, before climbing to the Occupation Road overlooked by the Megger Stones.
After following the Occupation Road for about a mile we head back downhill along a green lane to High Nun House, then cross the minor road and head down to Deepdale Beck which we follow downstream back to the Dee, which we then follow back to our starting point.

Barbon Beck and Brownthwaite

Barbon is great place to start and end a walk. Not only is there convenient parking – either at the layby at Hodge Bridge, or at the Village Hall – but there is a great deli and a highly rated pub, the remains of a Roman Road, the course of a disused railway, grand houses, ancient stone circles, and a motor sport venue.
This moderately challenging walk offers all that, plus artworks by Andy Goldsworthy, great views down the Lune Valley, an invigorating climb up Brownthwaite, a very attractive waterfall, and then an easy finish along the banks of Barbon Beck in the grounds of Barbon Manor.
